Local Economy and Community

Rural employment has dwindled – but not at Winton.  Estate cottages may no longer be primarily used for staff, but the team grows year-on-year as new enterprises are created.

There are now over 50 employees on the wage-roll. Since there are usually several projects on the go as well, this brings in local tradesmen and contractors.

Regular events require a wide range of suppliers so that the majority of the estate income is spent locally and, to a significant degree, reinvested.

One of the estate farms is planned to be developed as an extension of the tourism provision but with a more rustic feel.  The first step will be appointing an Estate Ranger, but then it is hoped to develop the farm land and buildings and to add an Activity Centre.

The centre is expected to use farmland and a water resource too; by integrating these – there are significant and exciting employment, environmental and economic benefits for the estate and the local community.

Community engagement is an important aspect of estate life. Open days have been held in the local three villages as well as estate tours. This website and the local Community Council website are used to communicate plans.
