One third of Winton’s residential properties are occupied by families working on the estate; the remainder are let out, including two for 4 and 5 star self-catering.

Cottages have classic estate names that reflect bygone uses like the Gate Lodges, Sawmill and the Laundry. Tenants must like living in them since most have been on the estate for well over 10 years, with one or two nearing a half century.

When properties are vacated, the opportunity is frequently taken to modernise them, particularly to introduce better insulation and heating.

If funds and planning policy allowed, more estate cottages would be built since the demand certainly outstrips supply.

For many years the management of Winton Estate was provided by Ogilvy Chalmers based locally in Haddington, until the business was sold by Francis Ogilvy to FBR Seed in summer 2022.
