Activities FAQs

Highland Games at Winton Castle in Scotland 960

All activities need to be pre-booked, numbers clarified and paid in advance.

We have minimum numbers of 8 for most of our activities. The upper limit will depend on the activity, Highland Games for example can accommodate up to 300 pax, but for larger groups doing activities where numbers are restricted, we can offer rotational activities. Please get in touch to chat to one of the events team about possibilities.

Most activities will take between 1 – 1.5hrs on site including safety briefings.

We still proceed with activities in most weather conditions, unless of course it is deemed unsafe by our lead instructor. We keep our eye on the forecast and should know in advance if the weather will be troublesome. We have the ability to adapt certain activities or offer alternatives where possible.

The weather isn’t always predictable in Scotland so we would recommend bringing a waterproof, warm layers, and sturdy footwear.

We ask for a £150, £300 or £650 deposit depending on final booking value. The remaining balance is due around 2 weeks in advance of your event.

Final numbers can be amended up until the final balance is paid, 2 weeks before the event, thereafter instructors are booked and unfortunately no refunds are possible.

There is a bus route that comes from Edinburgh to Pencaitland the no. 113, however it does take over an hour and may not suit activity timings. There is plenty onsite parking so simplest option would be to drive yourself or to organise a coach or taxi. We can offer local taxi numbers or organise this on your behalf.

We don’t have a restaurant on site, but we can cater for individual groups with simple rustic options like bacon rolls, soup & sandwiches or one pot lunches like Casserole, chilli or lasagne. There is also a local restaurant in Pencaitland called The Winton which may be able to accommodate groups if booked in advance.

Alcohol is not permitted before any of our activities, in addition should any guests arrive under the influence of drugs or alcohol or deemed unfit by the instructors they will not be allowed to participate.

We do have a licenced bar on site so, beers or a nip of whisky can be purchased after activities.

On booking a map will be emailed out, but the meeting point unless otherwise stated will be our main car park adjacent to the potting shed and walled garden.

Winton Castle is an exclusive use venue and so unless hired in its entirety, access unfortunately will not be possible.

Children are welcome although may not be able to participate in some activities – please get in touch with a member of the events team to discuss.
