If you’re planning a golf holiday in East Lothian near Edinburgh, Winton is the perfect place to base yourself and comes with a remarkable golfing heritage. Since the dawn of golf, the owners of Winton have played an important role in developing East Lothian’s most famous golf courses because Winton’s estates stretched as far as Muirfield, Archerfield and Gullane.
The Archerfield Estate was home to Muirfield, leased to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. At that time, the Archerfield Golf Club had only 13 holes! The Nisbet Hamilton Ogilvys, Winton Estate’s owners, promoted golf through their leading roles at the pioneering golf clubs, as well as with practical initiatives such as ensuring there was a public water supply for Gullane.
East Lothian is aptly known as ‘Scotland’s Golf Coast’, because it boasts some of the best links and inland golf courses in the world: North Berwick, Gullane and Dunbar lead the way.
There are 22 excellent golf courses within 10 to 25 minutes drive of Winton Castle, including Craigielaw, Royal Musselburgh (the oldest playing golf course in the world), Longniddry, Gullane and North Berwick with friendly clubhouses.
