Whisky Tastings

testimonial I enjoyed the whisky tasting (dark colour, marvellous flavour, very old and certainly very expensive!).

Whisky Tastings Scotland

Absorb the ambience of Winton Castle whilst learning from our expert whisky (‘nose’) hosts. An ideal ice-breaker, nosing and tasting drams of our national drink ‘aqua vitae’ – the Latin for ‘water of life’ in a historic setting. Learn about world-famous Scottish single malt whiskies, and the process from malting the barley to mashing, to pot still distillation to cask, ending the process with a dram in your hand.

Whisky tasting is a popular activity for overseas visitors as well as locals. Experience a tutored whisky tasting for your corporate team buildingincentive event, or stag or hen party, and learn to tell your Speysides from your Islays and our local lowland whisky, Glenkinchie.  With different options your tasting may take place in our candle-lit, fifteenth century Vaulted Cellar, or perhaps outdoors in our magical Fairy Glen or stunning Walled Garden where you will find the Potting Shed hidden in the wall. Large groups can easily be catered for indoors in the castle’s glorious Drawing room.

Another option is an after-dinner, informal whisky tasting. A whisky station can be set up, stocked with several whiskies and anyone who would like to taste, can try some drams and ask questions about their characteristics and provenance.

Continue to soak up the castle atmosphere with a complimentary tour by our resident historian who will captivate you with the Castle’s enthralling history, including direct links the Setons of Winton Castle. Sir Christopher Seton, depicted in the film the Outlaw King, served Robert the Bruce and in fact married his sister Christina Bruce. Let your imagination further run wild as tales are told of the Rough Wooing when Henry VIII attacked the castle due to Mary Seton’s loyalty to Mary Queen of Scots, as her most faithful and favored Lady-in-Waiting.

Choose from a selection of Scotland’s finest single malts from the following regions, each with their own unique characteristics, from the golden sweeter honey-hues to the more powerful peaty and smoky amber malts:

Lowlands: Glenkinchie & Auchtentoshan

Speyside: Macallan, Glenfiddich, Aberlour & Balvenie

Highlands: Dalmore, Glengoyne, Glenmorangie & Oban

Islay: Laphroaig and Lagavulin

Islands: Jura & Talisker
