Music at Winton: Monday 15 September 7.30pm

Winton House in East Lothian is once again a music venue for the Lammermuir Festival on Monday 15th of September at 7.30 pm.

Music at Winton features the “brilliant period instrument players” Ensemble Marsyas and Scotland’s excellent young Maxwell Quartet. This two part concert contrasts 18th century wind music with 20th century strings, including a Fantasy String Quartet by local Haddington composer Raymond Dodd, and music by Fasch, Boismortier, Geminiani, Couperin and Prokofiev.

The audience will listen to each performance separately in the castle’s Scottish Renaissance drawing room and Georgian ballroom.

During the interval visitors will be able to enjoy a complementary glass of French Malbec or Italian Pinot Grigio with the complements of wine merchants Inverarity Morton, or a glass of locally distilled North Berwick Gin.

As the Sunday Times wrote: “Ensemble Marsyas play everything with real flair” so this extravagant double bill will be one not to miss.

Winton House is well-known as an inspiring venue for exclusive private parties, business events and entertaining activities. It’s also a house which is often filled with music played by the musically talented Ogilvy family whose home it is.

The Lammermuir Festival takes place amongst East Lothian’s beautiful rolling countryside, between the sea and the Lammermuir Hills just east of Edinburgh. Dotted with peaceful towns and villages, ancient churches and great houses, it remains one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets, even though it is less than an hour from Scotland’s capital.

The fifth Lammermuir Festival runs from Friday 12 – Sunday 21 September 2014 bringing great music and musicians to sixteen venues across the historic county, from the very small to the very grand and with music carefully matched to each building’s character and acoustics.

Artistic Directors Hugh Macdonald and James Waters said, “When we launched the first Lammermuir Festival in 2010 we never dared imagine that only five years later it would be so well established as a major event in Scotland’s musical calendar. We’re tremendously excited about this year’s programme, which for the first time adds opera to a packed ten-day schedule. We feel sure that people will come from far and wide to enjoy great music performed by some of the world’s finest musicians in this beautiful part of Scotland.”
