Family Spring Open Day on Sunday 3rd April 2022 (12 noon – 4.30 pm)

Winton Castle’s popular annual Family Spring Open Day is back after a 2 year absence due to the pandemic!

Winton has been opening its gardens since 1931 under Scotland’s Garden Scheme, longer than any other Scottish garden, and previously without a break except for once during WW2. However, the pandemic has meant that the terraced and walled gardens and castle were unable to open in 2020 and 2021.

Anyway, garden lovers, historians and families are once again invited to visit Winton Castle on Sunday 3rd of April (12 noon – 4.30 pm).

You’ll be able to see the wild gardens round the castle awash with daffodils, and the walled garden and terraced gardens full of colourful spring flowers.

Elite Falconry Display at Winton Castle

Profits from the Spring Open Day will be going to Marie Curie, the charity for terminal illnesses, and Scotland’s Garden Scheme charities.

As always, there will be lots of family entertainment, including:

  • A dramatic display with eagles and birds of prey by Elite Falconry.
  • An Easter Egg Hunt and obstacle course.
  • Archery and axe throwing.
  • Café Winton or picnics.
  • Lucas ice cream van.

You can go on guided garden tours and tours of Winton Castle. Guests will learn about the castle’s Scottish Renaissance ceilings and chimneys (as well as their recent ambitious restoration during the pandemic), and its historic links to the powerful Seton family, Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Elgin Marbles.

Visitors can enjoy teas and light lunches at Cafe Winton which will be offering delicious homemade sandwiches, cakes, hot lunches, burgers and soup. Or, you can bring your own picnic and find a spot in the beautiful gardens.

There’s no need to pre-book. See more on the Open Day here.

We look forward to welcoming you to Winton on the 3rd of April.
