Richard and Katriona in Winton Castle's walled garden - wedding photo.

After a romantic proposal on top of a mountain overlooking Lake Tekapo in New Zealand, Richard and Katriona came home to her native Scotland to tie the knot.

With the help of their wedding venue, Winton Castle, they planned a beautiful wedding day, filled with gorgeous flowers, amazing food, family, friends and music.

We are very grateful to Steph Telfer at the Scottish Wedding Directory for letting us share this lovely story, and, of course, to the bride and groom.

“Richard moved into the house share I was living in, in Oxfordshire, where we still live and work.

“It was sort of like Uni Halls for young professionals. He thought I was ‘a bit posh; posh and hot.’ My first impressions were that he was so easy to talk to, and his personal training keeps him in good shape.

“He very quickly became my best friend. My ab workout consists of him making me laugh whenever we’re together.

“Richard got down on one knee on top of a mountain overlooking Lake Tekapo in New Zealand. It was the last day of a month-long trip to Australia and New Zealand.

“He proposed to me with a really pretty stand-in silver ring he’d had made for me but he’d booked in a date for us to go shopping for my actual engagement ring in Hatton Gardens when we got home.

“My engagement ring is a beautifully detailed and personalised Verragio. The main diamond is surrounded by a halo of diamonds, and it’s inset with sapphires and detailed metalwork.

“When it came to planning, his priority was the food and wine, and mine was the wedding venue and music.

“I wanted a venue close to my family in Scotland and the Shetland Isles. We both loved Winton Castle as soon as we saw it; it’s not too big and feels intimate as well as grand.

“The colour scheme mainly derived for my family tartan, Roxburgh, so greens, blues and reds were prominent. I love emerald green, so that colour became a big feature.

“Winton Castle is so elegant that we didn’t need to worry about décor. They had already styled the house so nicely, and had fresh cut flowers in every room picked from the castle grounds.

“Our florist was recommended to us by Winton Castle and we couldn’t have been happier with the flowers. Ruth Kerr designed some beautiful bouquets and buttonholes based on the very vague and sketchy brief we provided her with.

“Winton’s wedding and events manager, Rae McGonigle, is a superstar. Rae was the reason we weren’t stressed about our wedding. No bridezilla here…

“My dress was a Pronovias gown bought from a shop in Oxford called The Bridal Box. It had a detailed lace, fitted top with sleeves which sat off the shoulder slightly and a deep ‘V’ down the back of the dress.

“Richard is only part Scottish, so he ummed and aahed for months about whether to wear a kilt or not. I think it was a harder decision than the wedding dress!

“In the end he wore a dark grey suit from TM Lewin with a waistcoat and tie handmade in my family’s Roxburgh tartan in Scotland at R & I MacDonald Kiltmakers. He also wore oxblood coloured shoes from Loake.”
